Choosing a Fly Reel
There are many different fly reels out there to choose from when you are in the market for one, but here are a few guidelines that may assist you in purchasing the right one for all your needs. First though, you may be wondering exactly what a fly reel is – if you are a beginner, you may not be familiar with each and every piece of fly fishing equipment, so here is a little break down of what a fly reel does!
A fly reel was designed to hold the line in a nice, compact and convenient location and it can be removed if needed. The ‘reel’ part of a fly reel is when you are reeling the line in – say, if a fish bit on your line. Now, despite what most fishermen say, mostly all fly reels are the same and although, the super cheap models may have a lot of imperfections, you can still use them – although, you may be extremely frustrated by the end of the day. It may be a wise idea to just fork over the funds for a more expensive fly reel than risk being frustrated with a super cheap fly reel.
When you are in the market for a fly reel, you want to consider what weight you may be looking for. You want to be sure that you match the weight of your fly reel with the rod you are going to place it onto. You need to make sure that the ‘feel’ of your fly reel on your fly rod is perfect and will meet all of your specifications – otherwise you will again, probably be frustrated by the end of the day for your fly reel not feeling right.
Another thing to consider is the actual size of the fly reel, many companies are coming out with large arbor reels which store the line in very large coils and therefore minimizing line memory – which of course let’s you cast longer. Also, these types of fly reels can increase the drag consistency because the spool of line will not be spinning as often. A larger fly reel arbor may be your best bet if you decide to do a lot of fishing.
